GREAT BRITAIN MEN CURLING TEAM BRINGS HOME BRONZE, LADIES CAME FOURTH
in 1st World Deaf Curling Championship
World Deaf Ice Hockey and Curling Championship being organised for the first time and this was held at Winnipeg, Canada
Great Britain Men and Ladies took part in Curling Championship, after a late extensive training at Fenton’s Rink, Tunbridge Wells and Braehead, Glasgow; the squad were ready for this challenge without match practice. Whilst at Fenton’s, the squad were coached by Ian Baxter after the first coach who has decided to step down earlier this year, Mike Webster have had a little time to find another coach and with the help of team member it was Ian Baxter was approached and agreed to do the task for the last seven weeks but he was unable to be at Canada. Chris Robinson, British, was asked to help out, he flew in to Canada from Minneapolis USA (Chris used to play Rugby for Harlequin and Barbarian in 70s)
In the men section at Heather Curling Club, in Round Robin stage GB beat Finland 8 to 6 after winning four points at the last two ends, the next match was against USA what a thriller this turned out to be as needed to play an extra end after a score of 11 all USA fought hard to win six points at the last two ends. GB has the hammer and won the extra end by one point, this proved to be an exhausting match as evening match against Red Hot Favourite, Canada, and GB got thrashed by the Canadian team 17 to 5, also lost to Switzerland at the final stage of Round Robin 12 to 3
In Semi-Final, GB, comprises of McKinlay (Mac) Bradshaw, Daniel Webster, Mike Stubbs and Peter Stark Robert Childs being 5th, was determined that there would be no walk-over by Switzerland and was 3—0 up after 3 ends, GB has opportunity of having four points at the fourth end but Switzerland, being given the hammer, stolen it by one point score then 4—3, 5th end two points for Switzerland and further one point for Switzerland at 6th end and at the seventh end GB have had the opportunity of scoring four points, and they did not seek the advantage of having time out where coach Chris Robinson could give advice by taking an out-turn but Skip chosen in-turn takeout, a missed opportunity there as Switzerland would not be able to come back from that and Switzerland got two points at 7th end but GB won two points at 8th end only to lose one point at 9th end. GB has the hammer for the 10th and final end, all tension, crowd watching adrenalin running high, all down to Peter Stark GB Skip and had the opportunity of stealing two or three points but the final stone did not do kindly for Team GB. Switzerland was relieved to have won the match and in the final they played Canada.
CANADA winning the GOLD, SWITZERLAND Silver and GREAT BRITAIN BRONZE

LADIES SECTION
Jacki Wan. Grainnie Abbott, Sarah Gallagher and Kathy Walker are in the squad as well as Laura Spence being fifth player, three of these ladies only had few months practice but they have practice really hard under the eyes of Ian Baxter the first match against Croatia, nerves were showing but able to stay cool and GB find themselves 3—2 up at end of fifth ends then after two further ends it was 6—2 up then Croatia fought back by winning one point at each of two ends to make it 6 to 4, GB has the hammer for the last end and was jubilant in winning two further points but did not declare it before shaking hands so official score a win for GB 6—4, next match was against USA, one of two favourites and lost to USA 16—2 as USA was determined throughout the match not to allow GB winning any points, next match Laura Spence takes the place of Sarah Gallagher, playing against Canada who has well over 30 years of experiences compared to GB team and was 10 –0 up after two ends, they were in a scorching form, but did not melt the ice, GB struggled against Canada and lost by a huge margin.
Evening match GB, with the original squad, due to play Slovakia, who were in a mixed form after having lost to Croatia earlier by 11 to 3, GB was clearly in a mood to win this match to avoid Tiebreak, unfortunately wrong tactics used and lost the match by 12—6 as Slovakia was allowed to win by 4 points at two ends.
TIEBREAK
GB was drawn against CROATIA what a needle match this turned out to be GB lead after 5 ends by 5—4 Sixth end Croatia fought back and won a point then it is 5—5 GB won the next two ends by three points and Croatia snatched 4 points at the end of 9th end, score being 9—8 to Croatia. GB has the hammer for the final end and got two points winning the match by 10 to 9, all down to Kathy Walker who was very cool in playing the last two stones to win the two points, in the next tiebreak held an hour and half later GB clearly tired after the first tiebreak, the coach decided to stick to the same four…Jacki Wan, Grainnie Abbott, Sarah Gallagher and Kathy Walker and lost out to Slovakia 9 to 3. The ladies team did very well indeed
CANADA got the Gold USA Silver and SLOVAKIA Bronze

Emma Mortimer would like to introduce to you their Signature Annual Awards and ask for your help in promoting them; through your website, as a feature in any newsletters/publications you produce, forwarding on to others or through nominating?
Search for stars in deaf communication is launched
The hunt is on to reward people in the UK and Ireland who have done most to overcome the communication barriers deaf people face in everyday life.
The Signature Annual Awards will celebrate the achievements of those who excel in disciplines such as British Sign Language and lipspeaking. The awards will also recognise those individuals and organisations that champion the industry and those striving to build bridges between deaf and hearing people.
Signature Chief Executive, Jim Edwards, said: “The Signature Annual Awards are about rewarding champions in deaf communications. They are designed to bring recognition to people who have made, in their own way, a significant contribution towards a society in which deaf people have full access.”
There are five award categories in total – the Joseph Maitland Robinson Award for Outstanding Contribution, Learner of the Year, Teacher of the Year, Communication Professional of the Year and Organisational Achievement.

REPORT:-
A good turnout of 25 players arrived on the day at York, 15 Gent and 10 Ladies. Matches start at 9.30 and finishes in time at 5.30 for Presentation of Trophies. Mr Denis Cleary, GBR coach was our ‘guest of honour’ to hand over trophy/cup, small trophies & certificates to winners & runners-up.
Players coming from all over places in UK, some former GB players have reunited after so many years and happy times were said of the past.
We raised raffle to help our Badminton fund, profit of £38.00 which is good.
We also have had 4 Hull university masseurs (students) to help with our tired players; they were providing the services for FREE as long as I issued them a diploma for their portfolios as part of their training hours.
Many thanks to BRITISH DEAF SPORT for sponsoring - hire of courts and 9 tubes of shuttlecocks. Also to help fund for updating of engraving winners names onto the shield/cup that has been passed on for many years.
York 2010 is booked for Saturday February 13th at the same time/venue. Photos will be published in due course.
