Garden Party at Buckingham Palace

By Mike | July 23rd, 2009

BDSC Chair Mr Edward Webb and his wife Sheila, along with their interpreter, had attended to the Garden Party held at Buckingham Palace in presence of Her Majesty the Queen. This was held recently

They were among hundreds of other voluntary groups and on that day the weather had been very kind.

Edward, better known as Teddy, was honoured to be invited after being nominated by BDSC and he and his wife has really enjoyed the day

REPORT:-

A good turnout of 25 players arrived on the day at York, 15 Gent and 10 Ladies. Matches start at 9.30 and finishes in time at 5.30 for Presentation of Trophies. Mr Denis Cleary, GBR coach was our ‘guest of honour’ to hand over trophy/cup, small trophies & certificates to winners & runners-up.

Players coming from all over places in UK, some former GB players have reunited after so many years and happy times were said of the past.

We raised raffle to help our Badminton fund, profit of £38.00 which is good.

We also have had 4 Hull university masseurs (students) to help with our tired players; they were providing the services for FREE as long as I issued them a diploma for their portfolios as part of their training hours.

Many thanks to BRITISH DEAF SPORT for sponsoring – hire of courts and 9 tubes of shuttlecocks. Also to help fund for updating of engraving winners names onto the shield/cup that has been passed on for many years.

York 2010 is booked for Saturday February 13th at the same time/venue. Photos will be published in due course.

TEN PIN BOWLING

By Mike | March 13th, 2009

British Deaf Sport

Ten Pin Bowling Open Championships

At Madison Heights, Maldon, Essex

After a long spell of non activity of this Championship, last competition was in 2002, this has finally taken place at Madison Lanes, Madison Heights, Maldon, Essex, where their Bowling Manager, Leeroy Copping use to be Team GB Coach at 2001 Deaflympics Rome, is based. This event was organised by BDS with the help of British Deaf Ten Pin Bowling Section.

A good number of Bowlers turned up and fierce competition was played throughout the afternoon with the favourite Ray Lay of Hemel Hempstead showing his great form, he has set a score of 300 points and this was his third occasion that he scores the maximum.

BDS set a challenge to anyone who score a maximum of 1500 points in five games at one session would get good prize money.

In the men’s section top four came through to the ladder stage, these people were Ray Lay of Hemel Hempstead, Paul Johnson of Basildon, Bob Sharp of Reading came third and Phil Bocking of Clacton, fourth. Barry Peace of Sheffield narrowly missed out by 23 points; he lost his concentration at the second game which was proved to be crucial to him.

Bob Sharp’s second and fourth games has helped him to go through the ladder stage. Each player played five games.

In the Ladies section, Lisa Crouch of Croydon was on top form coming out on top and second place was Claire Sawyer of Ipswich and third Najada Serra also of Ipswich, top three came through the ladder stages

LADDER STAGE

In the men’s section Phil Bocking was in a better shape than Bob Sharp and Phil Bocking beat him by 31 points over ten frames, but loses in the next ladder stage to Paul Johnson by 27 points. In the final Ray Lay kept up his momentum and win over Paul Johnson by 47 points.

The ladies section of the ladder play, Claire Sawyer seems to have tired out and this enable Najada Serra to win her game by 12 points.

Najada Serra then played Lisa Crouch in the final. Lisa Crouch declared the winner by 17 points.

BDS has announced that the next Open Championship will be in Sheffield on Oct 17th 2009, also will be organising more competitions like Pairs and Region v Region.

Badminton: Germany 2007 report

By admin | October 12th, 2007

2nd World Deaf Badminton Championship.
1st World TEAM Badminton Championship.

Germany 2007.

Summary Report by Janet Thomson;

I have fielded 8 players, 4 Men and 4 Women for the 2nd World Badminton Championship aswell as 3 officials – Kevin Harper (Hull) Denis Cleary (Ripon) as our hearing 2 Coaches and Caroline Bird – Deaf (Oxford), our Sport Therapist. I included myself as a player.

Players name (place) are:-

Rajeev Bagga (Coventry)

Carl Sadler ( Hull)

Dominic Caswell (Cardiff)

Xander Hurley (Oxford)

Andrea Hardwick ( Leeds)

Fiona Walker (Glasgow)

Janet Thomson ( Hull)

Nicola Reynolds (Whitby).

The tournament consists of Team Event and Individuals event and 13 countries have entered the team Event, the 1st World Team Event. A total of 20 Countries entered the individual, which will take place from Tuesday 1st October.

GBR was unseeded as 6th from last Deaflympics Games so were drawn ‘wild’ but a good draw vs. Kazakhstan and Lithuania. We plan our strategy to go 2nd to make an easier path to the final. We fielded our strongest 4 players to start of and we won 3-2 lost on Ladies Singles and Mixed Doubles. We then fielded a weaker 4 players vs.Lithunina and lost 5 – 0 – that was our target plus to give every player a game to start off their playing tournament. We were then drawn to Korea in K/O stages – we fielded our Strongest 4 and won 3 – 2 losing both Ladies Singles and Doubles. We were through to the last 4 – vs. Japan and we lost 3-2 losing on Ladies Singles and both Doubles. The Men doubles had 3 medal match points but lost 3rd set 22-24. A very big disappointment but that the way it goes. We had a play-off for Bronze vs. Lithuania expecting to win 3 – 2 but our Men missed out via injury on the 3rd set – Carl couldn’t keep on with severe pains in back, he was sent to hospital after the match has finished 3rd set 21/18 down. GBR team came 4th – this still a brilliant stand for the 2009 Deaflympics in Taipei which means we are seeded to avoid the top 3. Winner: Russia

2ndJapan

3rd – Lithuania

INDIVIDUAL EVENT

SINGLES:

Rajeev No1 Seed kept his clean sheet to win concurrently to GOLD MEDAL after winning in the final 21/16, 21/14 to Jannich Anderson of Denmark. Proud to carry the British Flag and to have heard our National Anthem when he receives his GOLD MEDAL. Rajeev will remain world Championship for another 2 years.

 Badminton: Germany 2007 report

Carl – he had to pull out of the Singles due to back injury.

Dominic – He played 2 matches in Round Robin having won 1 and lost 1, next round – he went out to Malaysian guy 5/21, 8/21.

Xander – He played 2 matches in Round Robin but failed to qualify next round as narrowly missed winning vs. the German Guy losing 3 sets 21/23, 21/16, 11/21 – if he has won the 1st match due to bad line calls, things would have been different.

Ladies:

Andrea: - She won 2 matches in Round Robin but went out 1st round to Slovakian Girl who towered a foot taller than her, she lost 9/21, 14/21.

Fiona: – She had both easy and difficult Round Robin as 1st match won 3 setter but 2nd matcher opponent retires due to knee injury. She went out 1st round losing to Swiss Lady 17/21, 18/21 but hard-fought match this was.

Nicola won her 2 matches in the round robin but lost out in 1st Round to Japanese girl, 7/21, 9/21.

Janet – unfortunately was drawn to strong Bulgarian teenager and suffered a torn hamstring injury in the second set of the 1st Round Robin match, – she went out 8/21, 3-4 ret: She took no further part in the tournament since and has to rest for 6 weeks to recover her injury therefore her doubles were given away to opponent, apology to Nicola and Xander to have missed out on this.

Badminton: Germany 2007 report Badminton: Germany 2007 report

MEN DOUBLES:-

Rajeev/Carl has a bye so played Lithuanian in 2nd Round, Carl has to be strapped up in order to get through as can win them but struggled to win 3 sets. They had a rest of hours in between in Carl’s favour and won all other rounds to reach the final – the FINAL was too much for the tired boys (Rajeev achieved in Singles, Carl’s injury) and lost 14/21, 14/21 to Malaysian Men – they had not much of a playing time during the tournament so go the better of GBR by being fitter and more energy.

 Badminton: Germany 2007 report

Xander/Dominic were drawn 1st round to tough Russian – very tight match to watch but unfortunate for our boys, they lost 14/21, 20/22,

LADIES DOUBLES:-

Andrea/Fiona were the only ones playing, they did well to reached the quarter-finals after beating KAZ & MAS in earlier rounds – a good draw they had but the Japs were too strong to make them through to the semis – they lost18/21,16/21.

MIXED DOUBLES:-

Only two in our GBR party:-

Carl/Fiona – Carl did well to maintain as far as he can with his injury – this has prevented him to play full-speed but have reached the quarter-final when Russian No1 pair beat them 21/17, 21/14 ( they went on to win GOLD)

Dominic/Andrea – managed to reach the last 16 having knocked out by Korean 1st pair 18/21, 10/21. Dominic & Andrea did excellent matches in previous rounds vs, Russian No3 and Bulgarian No2 to reach the last 16.

So GBR did very well, our coaches praises us and said many congrats as we have exceeded their expectation level of play.

GBR came 4th in the World,

Gold Medal winner in Men Singles

Silver Medalist in Men Doubles.

Quarter-Finalist in Mixed Doubles.

Dominic was the one that achieved the best of him in Germany, mainly because of the Men doubles in the team event with Carl. This is Dom’s 2nd time experience of international badminton. He is only 23 and he is improving all the time. Xander didn’t stand a chance to be regonised because of his mixed partner and Dominic has the edge over him to be selected more in the team event. He can achieve to improve with match experience therefore we would like to see all 4 men in the 2009 Deaflympics.

Our 4 Ladies – this is our weakness, we haven’t a full commitment from them (apart from Nicola) if they want to continue in future. We must therefore, needs to search for lady players in the next 12 months to make a Team Event success.

A future is a must for GBR Badminton to compete in the 2009 Deaflympics as we must defend our Men Single title and runners-up on Men Doubles title. 4th is a very good seed for GBR for 2009 Taipei Deaflympics

A very Special thanks to our two coaches, Kevin & Denis and our Sport Therapist, Caroline for the effort, team work, respect and a pleasure to work with throughout the year and in GERMANY – it has been fantastic group – full of laughs, joy, tears and well enjoyed us all in GBR party.

Also Special thanks to BRITISH DEAF SPORT who has donated £2,400 towards our Sponsorship.

Thanks to FZ FORZA Clothing equipment who has donated 35-50% of the RRP costing of our clothing –

Tracksuit/top/short/racket/shoes – all sporting equipment.

Also thanks to PLAYERS, GB and NON-GB for raising funds via Badminton Marathon in May which raised a total of around £900.

Another thanks to East Riding Sports Hall, Chanterlands Ave, HULL as our home venue where we regularly trains on 6-8 weekends a year, also to Avenue Badminton Club for fielding some hearing players who have helped us in training as our opponents.

I also thanks the Coach’s who has brought in county players in on our last two training weekends and Xander for bringing in mixed players.

I like to thank everyone for supporting me, let me lead the role of Director/Manager, listened and respected me and that we have fondest memories of our time in Germany, the highs, lows, byways experiences we all have had in the 10 days stay in Mullium, Germany.

Also brilliant gesture from Rajeev Bagga who has announced in Germany to give away his SILVER MEDAL- Men Doubles and a racket to a family of Mr. Jankas of Lithuania who died in a tragic road accident in August 2007 aged only 20. This has a mark of respect in his memory to his families for he would have won medals if he was with us during the 2007 World Deaf Badminton Tournament.
